Based in Ames, IA, Mitchell Squire is an artist and educator whose practice engages material culture, architecture, and visual art. He is known for creating deeply cerebral work that explores a broad spectrum of American culture through collecting and archiving artifacts. Using a combination of found and salvaged objects, his collections, assemblages, sculptures, and performances offer complex socio-political associations and elegiac narratives that underline particularly potent historic events and institutional practices that quietly and continually influence the national dialogue.

Squire’s work has been exhibited at the New Museum (New York), the CUE Art Foundation (New York), Carver Bank (Omaha), and White Cube (London). He has completed residencies at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (Maine), The Banff Centre (Alberta), Ox-Bow School of Art (Michigan), and the Fabric Workshop and Museum (Philadelphia). In 2011, he was listed among 25 artists in Art Review Magazine’s annual issue “Future Greats.”

Squire currently holds the position of associate professor of architecture at Iowa State University, where he earned both B.Arch and M.Arch degrees. He has been a visiting professor at The University of Minnesota, The University of Michigan, and the University of California Berkeley.

As part of his two-month residency at Cannonball, Squire will conduct a series of weekend workshops for Miami youth based on a course he created and has taught for the past 5 years. Toys!: the Miami Workshop will challenge students to consider the playful connection between toys and socialization, and the creative processes whereby toys and play are engendered with meaning and by which everyday lives and cultures are emboldened by them to have significant impact. An initial survey of historical and cross-cultural typologies used for education, entertainment, and recreation, will ultimately give way to a focus on the potential of toys and play as “preludes to serious ideas” with potential to oscillate in fine balance intellectually and viscerally.

Participants will be required to design and fabricate creative objects and spaces, and to collectively host an event that engages the public in activities associated with imaginative play, socialization and creativity. The workshop activities will foster hands-on participation in the collective development of common goals and the negotiation of conceptual aspirations with available resources, allotted time, and everyday skill sets. Students will deploy procedures and methodologies commonly utilized in the creative disciplines to achieve visually stunning and physical engaging objects and spaces.
