Residency Period: July-September 2013
Benvenuto Chavajay is a multimedia artist based in Sololá, Guatemala. His residency is part of a new partnership between Cannonball and the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (CIFO). During his three-month residency, Chavajay will create new work to be included in CIFO’s annual Grants and Commissions Program group exhibition, which opens to the public in early September. Exhibiting artists are nominated by CIFO’s honorary Advisory Committee of leading arts professionals and artists from Latin America, United States, and Europe, who identify a broad range of multidisciplinary visual artists from Latin America creating some of today’s most innovative work.
Benvenuto Chavajay graduated from la Escuela de Artes Plásticas in Guatemala City, Guatemala. He further studied at the UNA Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica and most recently graduated from ESPIRA/ESPORA Escuela Superior de Arte in Nicaragua. He has presented solo exhibitions at Galería T20 in Murcia, Spain; and Sol del Rio Panza Verde, Centro Cultural Metropolitano, and Galería Panajachel Sololá, all in Guatemala. Chavajay is a former winner of the Guatemalan Secretary of Peace’s First Prize in Art and the Latin American Award at the annual JUANNIO art fair in Guatemala. His work is in the collections of the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach, California; and the Artist Pension Trust Collection and El Museo del Barrio in New York.
