Cannonball commissioned performance artist Dawn Kasper (born 1977, Fairfax, VA) to create a new work in response to her time in South Florida during her one-month residency. Her live performance, MATTER IS A WORD, A NOISE, was presented to the public on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at Cannonball.

Loosely inspired by a quote from the philosopher Alan Watts, Kasper’s performance unfolded in a room-size installation of scattered audio equipment and a large, single sheet of white Tyvek on the floor. Kasper marched from one “sound station”—combinations of speakers, tape recorders, turntables, microphones, and other devices—to another, methodically starting, stopping, and contemplating the sounds, which were mostly recorded by the artist in Miami. Occasionally engaging the audience in spontaneous monologue, Kasper also mapped her movements through the space on the Tyvek sheet—a literal tracing of her immediate being in time and space.
