Copyright and Appropriation Art

Over the summer, artist Richard Prince made headlines with his show, New Portraits, that was entirely composed of enlarged Instagram photographs originally posted by other users. Other than enlarging, Prince did not alter the images in his work. Though this is an extreme case, appropriation art often explores the margins of fair use expression and infringement. What are the boundaries between copyright and trademark protection and artistic expression? How does appropriation exist as a dialogue with existing copyright fair use jurisprudence?

Join Cannonball’s LegalLink Coordinator, Allyn Ginns, and GUCCIVUITTON  for an evening of discussion regarding the specific legal issues surrounding the use of appropriation in art.
