The River and the Steersman: Capital Circulation in the Anthropocene, Lecture Series by Brian Holmes

  • Perez Art Museum Miami 1103 Biscayne Blvd Miami, FL, 33132 United States

With this lecture and slideshow, cultural critic Brian Holmes opens up a broad investigation of offshore production, containerized transport, computerized finance, and the relation of this “just-in-time” economy to the natural environment. Drawing narratives and visual materials from the research-driven exhibition “Foreign Trade Zone” (2014), which he carried out with artist and activist Rozalinda Borcilă, he focuses on the intermodal ports and logistics zones of Chicago, their colonial and industrial past, and their relation to contemporary finance. Subsequent lectures held at Cannonball will explore high-speed trading, maritime commerce and river basins considered not as highways for the circulation of goods, but as vital arteries of the planetary ecology. This lecture series – the “live” version of a forthcoming book – is an integral part of Holmes and Borcilă's teaching residency at Cannonball in Miami.
