Latitudes and Attitudes: Self-Determination and the Sustained Project

  • Cannonball 1035 N Miami Ave Miami, FL, 33136 United States (map)

Simply, this talk will be on mapping landscapes of unconventional exchange. Visiting Cannonball Resident, writer and curator Gina Fairley, will take the audience on a journey from a curbside window gallery in a gritty suburb of Sydney, which she founded and has co-curated over the past decade, to the congested streets of Manila in the Philippines, the slick sanitation of Singapore, tri-cultural lanes of Malaysia and jalan-jalan (walking) Indonesia, a country with the world’s largest Muslim population and pop grunge art scene.

It will be a conversation about the shifting vernacular of exchange, from the self-determined action or artist intervention - largely examples that address the urban environment, taking leave of the traditional gallery system and representation - to honing those examples back to modes for sustaining creative thinking within the pace of those scenes and their localized perceptions of markets and mobility. Latitudes and Attitudes is a jockey ride between global perceptions and local realities.
